Chain Bridge Forge, Spalding, Lincolnshire
A rare gem in Spalding is the Chain Bridge Forge, thought to date from circa 1800.
It was purpose built as a blacksmith’s workshop. Situated on the east bank of the River Welland it’s about a mile from the town centre. The project hopes to turn the forge into a living museum and engage the public with its rich history.
In an age where crafts such as blacksmithing are no longer at the heart of the community, it is easy to forget what a crucial role this building once played in the town, and its harbour.
The project aims to develop an educational programme that will not only engage and inform, but give young people in and around Lincolnshire the chance to learn these traditional skills in conjunction with a national qualification.
It is certainly worth visiting (opening times below) and for more information please consult the official website.
